What the hell is this "christmas" thing even about?

One is the Christian religious 'hey this was the day Jesus Christ was born and he's like, son of god or something and is super important' so let's celebrate'.
And the other part is 'There's this dude named Santa Claus that visits kids all over the world in one night to drop off toys to the good kids and coal to the bad kids. Kaiba-san actually had his essence here, since he's like, a fictional character but a lot of kids believe in him.'
Really it's a big holiday where families get together to have fun and eat good food and exchange gifts, or for japan, chicken, and we go on dates with our girlfriend/boyfriend and eat christmas cake! It's supposed to be romantic.

Aren't celebrations supposed to be real special?

New Years is the big one; that's the really big family gathering, food, special movies, and going to the temple and shrines to get your fortune told for the rest of the year.
Coming of Age Day, Setsubun for the start of spring, Valentines Day, White Day, Cherry Blossom Viewings, Golden Week's got a bunch of holidays-- Tanabata for the Star Viewing, Obon for end of summer and honoring our ancestors, Halloween's becoming a thing too, and then Christmas at the end of the year...
So it's like, a yearly thing, you know? Tradition in all that.
Don't you have holidays or festivals in your world?
no subject
Which probably answers your question. We don't, really. Maybe the Wall Cult has something like a yearly wall appreciation day I don't know about, but I don't pay attention to them.
no subject
Wall cult? Like they worship a wall or somthing?
no subject
They sort of view the walls surrounding our cities and protecting us as gods. Our great saviors. Most of them are kind of crazy.
[None of this probably makes sense without a context so he might as well add details.]
Our world has monsters called titans. They range from four to ten meters, usually, and eat humans. So three walls were build to protect humanity. Five years ago, one of the walls was destroyed and we lost a third of our living space.

[ Wow, that was blottily written, like the ink dripped from him writing too fast-- ]
four to ten meter giant cannibals??? Holy shit!!! They just like... eat people?? Are they like zombies, or somthing??
no subject
And uh, there are some that are even bigger than that. Which is why we lost the third wall.
But I belong to a section in military that fights them and tries to reclaim back our lands, so we do have ways to fight them.

What? The military? But you're what, 15? 16 years old?
[ Sending teenagers to fight giant cannibal monsters-- the hell was wrong with that world?! ]

[ Whoops, more ink-- ]
Holy shit that's fucking
apo--apocoapocalyptic! Like the world ended and you're the last bit of humans, or somthin out of a manga or anime![ Ah the pains of being genre saavy-- ]
no subject
Well... kind of. There are people outside the walls that fight against us.

Most Militaries or Defence Forces only start training at 18 years old. 12 years old is still considered a child in our time.
You should be going to school and playing with your friends, not training to kill giant monsters. Even in terms of biology, people don't really reach 'adult hood' until they're 25. You're basically a child soldier.
no subject
Now that he's made aware of it, yeah, it kind of sucks. Not that there's anything he can do about it at this point.]
I'm basically a child veteran right now, actually.
[Okay, maybe that isn't the best thing to joke about.]
I get that it's probably a bit upsetting to hear about, considering your standards, but that's just how our world works.

Whoever does fight Titans, tend not to survive for long. Jean was one of the 'lucky' ones. ]
How do you fight these things?
[ What sort of military could fight these giants? ]
no subject
The only way to kill a titan is to slash its nape, otherwise they're regenerate. So we train to be able to do that, no matter what military section you choose.
It's usually a group effort to kill one anyway. I've only killed one by myself, even if I was 6th in my class.
and it's way easier than fighting or killing humans[The last bit is messed but there's probably still a chance to see what it says.]
no subject
like how you fight would almost be cool if it wasn't so goddamn terrifying.
[ Junpei could sort of make out what Jean wrote there, and it... goddamn. Suddenly all those shonen comics he used to read had a sort of different light put on them... ]
No wonder you don't really do festival stuff... you probably don't have time for it, huh?
no subject
It does look cool, but that's about the only perk. It's really heavy on your body and really dangerous. If a titan grabs your wire, you're as good as dead.
[Jean unfortunately has a thing called bluntness so he doesn't really hold back with his words. Maybe he should have. Oh well.]
Yeah.

[ A long pause, but... ]
Hey, I know this is kinda off topic but uh
Wanna go out and grab something to eat sometime? Either here or back in the Index
I can show you some good places! And you could come see my other friends and stuff here
y'know, be a teenager and stuff for a bit, shoot the shit
no subject
Though what is he supposed to answer to that. He's kind of awkward. And something about his essence kind of wants to be left alone, even if it's not a quirk so it's easier to resist that feeling.]
Sure? I mean, if it's not a bother. You don't really have to.
no subject
We're all together here, might as well have fun, right?
[ This guy had already given away his teenage years for the sake of other people... so it wasn't a bad thing to actually enjoy himself here, away from it all. ]
