Hey everyone, what's up? My name is Bridge, and I'm pretty new here. I kind of got the general idea of this place and what's going on, but...

If there are a lot of buildings and people around you, then yeah you're in the city. They call it the Index.

[Hm... This is a little troubling unless the Storyteller ports him over to the book. On the other hand, maybe it's better this way? Might be really confusing if he was just dumped in here.]

So... If you're there, guess you can just learn about the place. There's a big library you can go to that has a lot of books you can read if you want to learn about your essence. And you also get your own house so you can try to find that.

The key will lead the way.

Just be careful... You can usually find ways to go around whatever it's trying to make you go through.

After that, should have enough money to buy basic things, and then you should read up on your essence.

Yeah, though I wouldn't mind taking the scenic route too. Guess it just depends on the kind of place it leads me through.

Yeah, I did notice a bit of money. Looks like finding a job is also a necessity, huh?

We get paid for helping out with the stories, but doesn't hurt to have something stable.

The people are pretty friendly, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

After that, it's just figuring out what all you can do now with your essence.

I have an idea, just based on what I already know about him. But it couldn't hurt to find out more.

That's good. I tried reading about mine, but gave up because the writing was too dense.

Frankenstein's monster, huh? Yeah, that story can be tough to get through.

Yeah. I don't know your character's story, but it's probably one of those long ones.

[Either Shakespeare or Greek. Or something in there—look it's been like a decade since he was in high school and learned anything about classic literature, Japanese or Western.]

It's actually not so much long as it is inconsistent. My guy's from Greek mythology, which can vary from telling to telling depending on where the stories are coming from.

Aaah, I see. Yeah I can imagine that being tough. But it might mean you have a lot to work with.

That's true. And luckily most stories seem to agree on the key points of his story. It's mostly just some background and history that differ here and there.

That probably won't matter too much... What's his story about?

Well, there are a few notable things about Orpheus, but the thing he was most well-known for besides his music was traveling to the Greek Underworld to retrieve the soul of his wife, Eurydice, after she had died.

Did he succeed?

....Not really. Orpheus did managed to use his music to convince the King and Queen of the Underworld, Hades and Persephone, to let him take back the soul of his wife. The only condition Hades gave him was that he couldn't look at her while they were leaving the Underworld. If he looked, Eurydice's soul had to return to Hades and he wouldn't get another chance.

But as he was leaving the Underworld, he couldn't hear Eurydice behind him, and thought Hades might have tricked him. So...he looked.

...So her soul had to return to the Underworld.

That's kind of depressing.
