Second Shield | The Case of the Dwarven Scammer

Sender: King Arthur/Firebird | Ryotaro Dojima/Eustace

Recipient: Everyone

[If you noticed Dojima’s handwriting before, it could be a bit chicken scratch- not from a lack of penmanship, but simply because his work had him writing up a lot of reports, and you had to do it quickly. This time however, his handwriting is noticeably neater and careful, trying to make sure no one can misread the information.]

Notice to All Aspects.

Within the recent months, a scam artist has been making the rounds in the Index, going after both locals and Aspects alike.

Based on description, the culprit is likely a Dwarf, who’s hair varies in colour, possibly dying it or using magic to change it.

If you or anyone you know has been involved in some sort of scam, please let either me or Eustace know; we’re currently involved in the investigation. Information on what the scam entitled, the date it occurred, the scammer's appearance, and location would be a great benefit.

[The handwriting then switches to something a little cleaner and not necessarily elegant, but neat.]

There are suspicions that there may be multiple individuals, making it a crime ring. If you think you found one, don't do anything stupid. There haven't been reports of any violent exchanges, but we don't need this to become more complicated than necessary.

However, if you do manage to capture one, bring them to the nearest law enforcement.

Feel free to respond to us here, or come to us in person at the Index Guard house where we’re currently stationed.

[Notes: Dojima did most of the talking, Eustace is the colored text. Reminder that all threads are open to everyone, so feel free to respond to each other to swap notes or be reminded of clues. The official "plotting" posting is here and anyone can still sign up if they want to! We can work out follow-up threads if desired and last reminder that players are free to come up with random clues to help flesh out the dwarves and scams.]

Hey, I said I could've fucking done it!

[She's definitely pissed about this, given the sharp spike in her language (and the angry expression on her face, but she's not going to stop him from doing that.]

Why the hell do you have those anyway? Are you some kind of burglar?

[She's starting to worry about her nonexistent reputation! Knights don't hang around burglars, not even garbage knights like her.]

I'm not letting you destroy property.

[Just a flat, deadpan tone as he completely ignores her fury.]

As for why I have these, it's for situations like this.

[After an audible click, he straightens up and places the picks back in his pack before testing the door. It opens easily and walks right on through down the next dimly lit corridor, this one more trashed up and with more clear signs of recent use.]
arrogator: (no one saying stop that)

my bad, I never got a notif for this one!

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Wow, take away all her fun. But the door's open so that removes a lot of her anger.]

The hell happened in here?

[She wasn't expecting things to look trashed, so that's a little surprising.]

how dare

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-03-08 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
[That's what he is, Mr. Fun Remover.]

If I had to guess, I'd say a hasty getaway.

[He kicks over an empty can in some disgust, a foul odor wafting through the air. Not a great time to have heightened canine senses.]

Look around and see if there's anything that can give us clues on who these people were.
arrogator: (no one saying be there)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-10 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like they're all a bunch of slobs.

[She'll start looking around, not really wanting to touch much, but she's making an attempt at least. She's pretty disgusted about this too, definitely not going near that can.]

Thought my Master's hideouts were gross, but at least those were clean. Didn't have a bunch of crap thrown around or whatever the hell's making that smell.

[Give him a second.]

...Week old cheese, rotten fruit, stale bread, crushed eggs...and whatever you initially suspected.

[Again. Heightened sense of smell blessing and curse.]

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-12 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't have to answer that!

[Her expression is just why. That's the best way to sum it up. All the world's why compressed into one baffled expression. That's Mordred right now.]

So they were down here for a while and then took off.

[She's at least trying to think about what that means while still being grossed out. Thanks Eustace.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 120)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-03-16 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
[And who said Eustace didn't have some sense of humor. Humor in the way of deliberately answering questions that didn't actually need them knowing it would bother her.]

That appears to the case. And they left... [Again, give him a few moments.] I would guess a few days ago. When did you say you got the offer again?
arrogator: (Idiots there will be a king)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Apparently she didn't say, so she will now.]

Couple days ago. Sounds like it matches up.

[Still not exactly in the best mood about that answer from him though.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 014)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-03-21 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yet they left after the scam... However, you said they were giving out free vouchers. Unless they were doing something else, I see no way they could profit from this aside from annoying people.

I suspect the real scam was having you eat but forcing you to pay by claiming the vouchers invalid. If that's the case, why would they rush out in such a hurry?
arrogator: (even you can't be caught unawares)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[She'd say it's because they're scared of her finding out and coming after them, but nobody here really knows who she is or cares, so that's not it.]

Maybe somebody was on to them? If it's going around and people are getting suspicious, they might've decided to bail.
flamekthunder: (ϟ 018)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-03-24 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hm... It's possible. Although we only announced it now, the investigation has been ongoing before this.

[Although if someone from the other teams did tip them off, then that's just shoddy work and the disapproving frown he wears is clear enough as to what he thinks of that.]

For now let's try and find where they went.

[There are three other doors, all of them looking roughly the same and in similar condition.]
arrogator: (clear from your vacant expressions)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-27 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Can you figure out which one by scent? There's three, so if each one goes on for a while, we might have to split up to check each one. And then we'd only really be able to check two of them at a time.

[Sometimes she has an okay idea. Sometimes.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 141)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-03-30 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[He gives her a slight look...but she has a point.

Without saying anything, he moves from one door to the next, noting the various scents as well as any other physical clues.]

...It seems they've used all these doors before...however, the trail is freshest here. [He stops at the middle door, eying it before he reaches out to try and open it.

This time, it's not locked.]
arrogator: (we're talking kings and successions)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-03-31 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's go then!

[Sorry Eustace, she's just going to push past him, through the door and into the hallway? Next room? Whatever it is she's charging in there, hoping the scammers'll be on the other side. Which they probably aren't.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 018)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-04-02 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
[.....Mordred, please stop reminding him of certain people he knows back home.

It's not necessarily a good thing.

Even though he can't smell or hear anyone else around, he can only sense so far so who knows who or what could be waiting, if anyone. So he just frowns before rushing after her. If there is anyone, she'll just have to serve as the main attraction and he can clean up after.

But fortunately, they don't have to worry about it. Through the hallway and an open door leads to what looks like a cellar that had been recently cleared out. There are some remaining furniture like tables, chairs, cabinets, as well as trash and other papers, but whoever used to be here was long gone.

Seeing a stack of those coupons, Eustace picks one up.]

This must have been their on site base.

[He then walks over to Mordred—and smacks her upside the head.]
arrogator: (working on my roar)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-04-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! What the hell was that for?

[She tenses up, basically everything about her expression and posture screams that she's ready to throw down here. She probably should look around the makeshift base, but now she's pissed off at him instead of just at the scammers. ]

flamekthunder: (ϟ 014)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-04-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
For being an idiot.

Did you even have a plan when you rushed in here?
arrogator: (Idiots there will be a king)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-04-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah? Of course I had a plan. I was going to put my foot in the ass of whoever was on the other side of that door.

[Not the greatest plan, but a plan!]

And you should be lucky I don't have my sword, that's a good way to lose a hand!

[That's more anger talking than anything else though.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 138)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-04-04 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hmph. It wouldn't matter if you did.

[Try it Mordred. But he just continues to look sternly down at her.]

Regardless of whether you could handle it or not, you would have compromised the entire investigation with that kind of recklessness.
arrogator: (no one saying stop that)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-04-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
What do you mean?

[She has absolutely no idea how she could've done that since if there was someone on the other side, she doesn't think they would've gotten away. And of course that's really the only thing she's thinking of since she's pretty new to this whole investigating thing.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 016)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-04-07 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
If there had been a group of people, not only could they escape, but the sound would have alerted anyone outside.
arrogator: (working on my roar)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-04-09 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
They wouldn't have gotten away!

[She's got nothing on the alerting someone outside thing though. She didn't think that one through.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 139)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2020-04-10 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
[He just sighs.]

Just think before you act, or at least give a warning.

[Not that there will be a next time. Unless the circumstances call for it, he is never bringing her on an investigation ever again—]

Now look around, see if you can find anything that might tell us where their next location is.
arrogator: (Idiots there will be a king)

[personal profile] arrogator 2020-04-13 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Fine.

[She'll start with the cabinets since that's where they found dye and paper before.]

Hey, while I'm doing this check the trash. Maybe they threw something away and since it doesn't smell as bad, you shouldn't have a problem with it, right?

[Yeah, still a little mad here.]
